We’ve Changed Our Name

Here’s Why and When

Our Staff and Board of Directors have decided, that to better serve our community, we need a better name. A name should reflect our mission. It should be unique and memorable.

Why make a change? We felt “The Advent Project” did not adequately express our mission to “inspire, educate, enlighten, and enrich Montgomery County and the Greater Washington, DC area with unique choral concerts, performed at the highest artistic standard.” In the “Elevator Speech” world in which we exist, we found ourselves explaining our name, especially in response to questions from our audiences and potential supporters and donors about our organization’s history.

Why change now? The timing of a name change is always problematic, but less burdensome in the relative early stages of an organization’s history. We felt our organization’s profile in Montgomery County, and the greater Washington, DC area could use a boost at this point in our history. We recognized in some cases our name was holding us back. We think the new name will help us attract new audiences and donors, essential ingredients we seek in our ongoing growth.

Will anything else change? Our mission and offerings will stay the same. As we move forward, we will continue to offer “Conversation Concerts” as well as traditional, non-lecture concerts in a wide variety of the choral and choral-orchestral repertoire. Our parent company, The Rockville Bach Academy, Inc, will not be changing its name. We are only changing the name of our performing ensemble.

When will this change happen? For us, this will be a gradual process. Officially we are changing the name of our ensemble on January 1, 2019. But there are many facets to changing the name of an established ensemble like ours. Our new website, www.chorsymphonica.org will be published in January, 2019. We will keep the old address for a while, and all visitors will be automatically forwarded to our new site. A new logo is being prepared, along with all the promotional materials like brochures, business cards, e-mail addresses, etc. Social media, our Facebook page, will also be included in the change. We’ll be flying our new brand alongside the old one for several months, to give everyone enough time to get used to our new name. We will be using our new name by the time of our next concert, in June, 2019.

What does “Chorsymphonica” mean? Chorsymphonica is based on the German word for our repertoire, “Chorsinfonik,” meaning the whole of choral and choral-orchestral repertoire. Our work is centered on choral music with orchestral accompaniment, the very repertoire named by the word Chorsinfonik. We felt this was a good reflection of our mission, what we do, and the singular purpose with which we operate.
